“The living spaces were comfortable and attractive and a plan was in place to continually upgrade the cottages. All of the staff tried very hard to create a homely environment for the children.”Care Inspection Report, March 2016
Within the grounds of Harmeny, we have five residential cottages: Holly, Hawthorn, Laurel, Eason and Caroline, which can each accommodate six children. All have individual bedrooms for each child, a lounge, kitchen, dining area, play areas, bathroom / shower rooms, and a staff sleepover room. Each cottage has a wide range of toys and games to suit all ages, including a television and a range of DVDs, a laptop, books, jigsaws, board games, arts and craft materials, and a well-equipped kitchen for preparing snacks or meals. All cottages have a garden with play equipment and vegetable patches, which the children help maintain. Wemyss, our day cottage, is similarly resourced to our five residential cottages, providing a nurturing base for our six day pupils, who attend school alongside our residential children.
Children and care staff have all their meals together in their cottage, prepared by a skilled Homemaker, and there is a strong emphasis on healthy eating and positive behaviours at meal times. Children are also supported to develop their independence skills, through choosing menus, keeping their rooms tidy and helping with light domestic tasks.
All our cottages are decorated to a very high standard. In 2017, Hawthorn was extended and refurbished as part of our vision for maximising flexibility and opportunities for our children. At all times our Estate, Catering and Domestic Teams work closely with care staff to ensure a homely, comfortable, safe and secure care environment for children.
