Harmeny Outdoors is part of Harmeny Education Trust and offers adventurous and environmental experiences for children who attend Harmeny School, as well as a range of activities for external groups, volunteering and student placement opportunities.
In March 2018, the outdoor service was inspected by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority, and once again received a very positive inspection report, with our adventure activities license being renewed for a further two years. In particular our bike programme was highlighted as an area of good practice: “The inspector was informed about the skills acquisition programme for bike maintenance which enables the students (under supervision) to upgrade old bicycles and then sell them at the local Balerno farmers’ market. The inspector felt that the inclusive and imaginative approach to using all aspects of cycling to engage the students and teach both bike and life skills was pro-active and innovative.” (Adventure Activities Licensing Authority Inspection Report, March 2018)
Successive inspections by the Care Inspectorate and Education Scotland have also highlighted our outdoor service as playing a vital part in contributing to very positive outcomes for children. Our most recent care inspection report stated, “Harmeny outdoors also provided opportunities for children to broaden their horizons and try new activities such as skiing, kayaking, camping and team building activities. These opportunities helped children to gain in confidence and physical ability as well as increasing their knowledge and life skills.” (Care Inspection Report, March 2016)
