Harmeny Outdoors offers a selection of adventure and environmental activities to schools, community groups, voluntary and private organisations. We are fully licensed by AALA (Adventure Activities Licensing Authority) as well as being approved by many Local Authorities for the delivery of adventurous activities.
Our Outdoor Learning Centre is based within the grounds of Harmeny School, a thirty-five acre woodland and wildlife area, situated in Balerno, at the foot of the Pentland Hills, near Edinburgh. This location allows for a unique outdoor learning resource, including: mature woodland, pond, wildflower meadow, allotment, aerial walkway, bird hide, mountain bike and go kart track, adventure playground, skate park, sports pitch and a wide range of outdoor play equipment. From here, we are able to offer a range of experiences and opportunities both within and outside the grounds, including: mountain biking, kayaking, climbing, bushcraft skills, orienteering, environmental and team building activities.
Our team of five Outdoor Learning Facilitators have an extensive range of skills and qualifications in education, adventurous, environmental and horticultural activity and are particularly skilled at working with children who have social, emotional, behavioural needs, as well as young people and groups from disadvantaged backgrounds. In addition, we can offer developmental qualifications and opportunities for practitioners who aspire to use the outdoors within their own individual field of work.
Any of our activities can be individually tailored to meet the needs of individual groups and can be fully integrated into the Curriculum for Excellence or other programmes, such as ASDAN, John Muir Award or the Junior Award Scheme for Schools (JASS).
