Environment / Location

Harmeny is situated in a 35 acre site in Balerno – a village on the edge of the Pentland Hills and within half an hour of the city of Edinburgh – and over the years, the physical resources have been constantly extended and improved. The finance for this has come from our own fundraising activities rather than local authority fee income, and the result is a purpose built, high quality education and living campus.

The surrounding natural woodland area provides for an integrated outdoor learning resource within the grounds including: mature woodland, pond, wildflower meadow, community garden, orchard, aerial walkway, bird hide, camping area, mountain bike and go kart track, adventure playground, skate park, sports pitch and a wide range of outdoor play equipment. In addition, the school has a caravan in Berwick-Upon-Tweed, where groups of children greatly benefit from short overnight stays, accompanied by staff.

Harmeny has a wide variety of well-resourced and maintained living and learning spaces, with Care Inspectorate / Education Scotland inspections consistently recognising our accommodation as ‘excellent’. These resources provide opportunities not just to engage children in learning but also play a key role in all aspects of their development – social, emotional, physical and spiritual. Programmes can be designed to allow individual one-to-one work or group work, within a range of spaces – and children have the freedom to explore, play, develop skills, take risks – and most importantly have fun – within a safe, nurturing and beautiful environment.
