Senior Management Team

Harmeny Education Trust Limited has a Senior Management Team which is responsible for for the day-to-day running of Harmeny School, and along with the Board, developing and implementing the strategic plan. The members of the Senior Management Team are as follows:


Neil Squires

Role:Chief Executive

Neil has been Chief Executive of Harmeny since July 2010. Prior to this he worked at Barnardo’s Scotland for eleven years, latterly as Assistant Director Children’s Services, overseeing a diverse range of services within Edinburgh and the Lothians, including residential, education and community support for children with social, emotional and behavioural needs. During his time at Barnardo’s, Neil led the development of a purpose built residential facility for children with learning disabilities, working closely with the fundraising team to raise the £1million required for the build.

Neil started his career as a children and families social worker within the Gorbals / Govanhill area of Glasgow. He has a passion for improving the lives of children and families affected by poverty and disadvantage and believes the key to achieving this is through highly supported, skilled staff teams and a commitment to their ongoing development.


Craig Paul

Role:Head of Care

Craig was appointed as Head of Care in Harmeny in February 2018, having commenced his employment at Harmeny, as a Residential Childcare Worker, in December 2000, and holding the position of Residential Manager from 2006. Craig has previous experience of working with children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties in a specialist educational setting and in Secure Services for Children and Young People.

Holding a strong belief in life-long learning, Craig values the learning and development opportunities available at Harmeny, including for social work students on placement, who gain a greater understanding of the benefits that residential child care can deliver. Having been supported by Harmeny to undertake his BA Social Work Degree, more recently Craig completed his SVQ in Care Services – Leadership and Management (Level 10) and uses his knowledge of trauma informed care to support the children and young people.

Craig has a particular commitment to furthering links in the local community as a way of developing children’s talents and interests.

Mandy Shiel

Role:Head of Education

Mandy has been working in the education sector since 1995, after graduating from Moray House College with a first class honours BEd degree in Physical Education. Her career began at Wester Hailes Education Centre where she worked as a PE teacher, moving into the guidance structure and then to the post of Depute Head. Her ambition to “get it right for every child” led her to into the role of GIRFEC Development Officer for the City of Edinburgh Council where she was employed for three years, working across all organisations implementing the Scottish Government initiative.

Prior to joining the Harmeny Senior Management Team in August 2017, Mandy was Head Teacher of Panmure St Ann’s special school, where like Harmeny, she was highly committed to making a difference to the lives of children with social, emotional and behavioural needs. Mandy is passionate about supporting children and young people to be the best they can be through care, therapeutic support and a highly motivating learning environment, which meets the needs of all learners.

Nicky Findlay

Role:Head of Finance and Estates

With over 30 years’ experience in various accounting and finance roles, prior to joining Harmeny, Nicky spent eight years working as the Business and Finance Manager for a specialist alcohol and drugs charity based in Aberdeen. Here she was responsible for the smooth running of all the support functions within the organisation. Working within the senior management team and closely with the board, her role included developing the systems and processes required by a growing, innovative organisation, and ensuring good governance and legal requirements were met.

Prior to this, Nicky worked within the oil and gas and service sectors in various finance and management roles, including managing family owned hospitality businesses. In 2006, after a career change, she completed an MSc in Property Economics and undertook academic research for a further year. She joined the Harmeny Senior Management Team in December 2017 and since then has used her property management experience to ensure the estate continues to be run and developed in the same excellent manner for all those who live, work and visit Harmeny.

Sean McCahill

Role:Head of HR and Organisational Development

Sean joined the team in November 2019, having acted as an HR and employment law consultant to the school for the preceding three years. A graduate of the universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde, Sean is dual qualified as a Chartered HR practitioner and an employment solicitor, and this combined knowledge allows him to provide HR solutions that are compliant with the law and best practice.

In his previous role Sean provided advice and guidance to a variety of organisations across all sectors, including a large number of independent schools, on all HR-related matters. Prior to undertaking consultancy roles, Sean worked in senior HR positions across healthcare, transport and education, including in the former James Watt College and the University of Strathclyde.

Sean has a wealth of experience of developing and delivering training and coaching across the UK, and is passionate about knowledge-sharing. He is particularly interested in equality and diversity issues and has implemented a number of initiatives in this area.
