Learning & Development at Harmeny

As a learning organisation, we are highly committed to ensuring our staff group have the necessary skills, qualifications and support to effectively do their jobs – providing children with a safe, nurturing, caring and accepting environment which will support them in reaching their full potential.

Through our SQA Centre, we have supported staff to achieve minimum registration qualifications as well as offering a variety of qualifications relevant to their staff roles.

We have a comprehensive Induction Training Programme and Continual Professional Development (CPD) is a priority for all staff, including those who are required to undertake specific post registration development. We believe this plays an important part in supporting staff within their roles at Harmeny but also takes account of their future aspirations.

Each staff member has a Personal Development Plan, which is continually reviewed through supervision and within their Annual Performance Review.

Our emphasis on having a Core Learning & Development Curriculum means that all staff – from teachers and residential care workers, through to education support staff, administration, housekeeping, kitchen and estate staff – can all access Learning and Development opportunities.

We also enable and encourage staff to access external learning opportunities – both accredited and developmental – and have established close working relationships with a number of external providers, including universities, further education colleges and independent specialist providers for learning and development. We also have strong links with CELCIS (Centre for Excellence for Looked After Children in Scotland) and EtCS (Educating through Care Scotland) and are committed to working alongside our partners, in contributing to the learning and development of staff within the residential education sector.
