Explore Harmeny on Doors Open Weekend 2019

Come visit Harmeny and explore our unique buildings, grounds and community garden on Sunday 29 September. Discover a remarkable educational project in historical surroundings as part of this year’s Edinburgh and East Lothian Doors Open Weekend.

We will also be sharing our plans for improving and extending Harmeny’s services to support more young people through the build of a new Learning Hub within the grounds.

We are proud to be part of 30 years of Doors Open Days

Discover the legacy of Edinburgh’s brewing industry

Designed in 1906, Harmeny House was the Balerno home of Sir William McEwan Younger, the Scottish brewer and political activist. He gifted the building in 1957 for the development of a new school. Here, children with great emotional and educational needs could be cared for in an extraordinary setting, which you’ll have the chance to explore.

Richard Murphy’s unique classroom layout at Harmeny

More recently, Richard Murphy Architects designed a courtyard of new classrooms and residential cottages, sympathetic to the original house. Guided tours of our buildings and grounds including our wildlife pond, adventure playground and community garden will be available. Gain an insight into how all our learning spaces enhance our work with young people.

Come and explore

Hop on a number 44 bus from central Edinburgh and discover how heritage and vision walk hand in hand at Harmeny.

The doors will be open from 11am to 4pm. Car parking is available onsite and tea and coffee will be provided. We look forward to welcoming you to Harmeny.
